History Friday -

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

Did you know that Adelaide, South Australia's oldest running Cinema opened on 22 May 1920 as the Wondergraph Picture Palace in the historical seaside suburb of Semaphore, South Australia and in 1952, it became the Odeon Star. A matinee was shown every Saturday – at the cost of three pence. It closed in 1976 - 1991 as cinema trend had declined during that period and in 1991 the Odean reopened, and films triumphantly returned to the upper auditorium. The Odean Star is still operating today in the main street of Semaphore. There are three separate movie theatres to view some of the latest movies and from the moment you look at the front of the theatre today to when you walk inside it is like going back in time. Chandeliers in the foyer, flooring from the era and upstairs they have a beautiful old projector historically on display. The Odeon Star cinema at Semaphore today offers $10 tickets and an affordable Candy Bar including their famous in house made Choc-Tops. Book to go with family, friends and/or work colleagues and have fun and enjoy the experience. We encourage you to put this on your list of things to do when you visit Adelaide South Australia. The staff are very friendly and it is wonderful opportunity to enjoy the movies in a memorable way. Adelaide is very lucky to have this historical theatre still showing movies. Have a meal before the show from one of the many eateries on Semaphore road. "What is considered the golden age of cinema? 1927–1969: Sound era and the Golden Age of Hollywood."
