History Friday | Clare Valley 🏛️
Step back in time in the heart of #Clare and discover the beautiful Former AMP Building — a striking example of South Australia’s rich architectural and commercial heritage.
Originally, this site was used as stables for a coaching company before a grand building was constructed in 1917 for the Australian Mutual Provident Society (AMP).
Built at a cost of £5,000, it originally included a five-bedroom residence and later housed the first offices of the Savings Bank of South Australia.
With its ornately carved stone façade, the building quickly became a landmark, forming an impressive entrance to Clare’s main commercial area. AMP used the building until 1950, after which it became the administration centre for the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA). Locals affectionately knew it as “the castle,” and it once housed the head office for six ETSA districts with around 130 employees.
Today, it stands as a wonderful reminder of Clare’s layered history and character — just one of many stories waiting to be discovered across the region.
