This month Adelaide is celebrating a very special milestone – 50 years of Rundle Mall.

On 1 September 1976, Rundle Mall officially opened after part of Rundle Street was transformed into a pedestrian precinct. And what an opening it was!.

Around 10,000 people gathered to celebrate, then-Premier Don Dunstan arrived by horse and cart, the SA Police Marching Band played – and perhaps one of the best stories of all… champagne flowed through the fountain!

Over the next five decades, Rundle Mall became so much more than somewhere to shop. It became part of our South Australian story.

Do you remember…?

 Visiting John Martin’s and the Magic Cave?

 The roller coaster and excitement of Dazzeland?

 Saying “Meet you at the Mall’s Balls” before we all had mobile phones?

 Horatio, Truffles, Oliver and Augusta – our much-loved Rundle Mall pigs?

 Or perhaps when Boy George and Culture Club brought thousands of fans into the Mall in 1984?

For generations of South Australians, there are memories of shopping trips into town, meeting friends, first dates, Christmas traditions, buskers, Friday nights and simply wandering through the Mall.

And 50 years later, it remains right at the heart of Adelaide – somewhere our visitors can shop, eat, explore, people-watch and experience a little of our city’s history.
