History Friday - History truly came to life for us recently aboard the magnificent Clipper Ship City of Adelaide during the South Australia's History Festival.
The “Women of the Ship” presentation was an unforgettable experience — with passionate volunteers bringing real stories to life through research, diaries, costumes, and beautifully told performances representing women connected to the ship across its incredible 162-year history.
Did you know the City of Adelaide was specifically designed to carry immigrants between London and Adelaide from 1864–1887, transporting up to 300 passengers at a time? Over the years, the ship also served as a cargo carrier, isolation hospital, and Royal Navy drill ship before almost being lost forever in Scotland. Thankfully, passionate Adelaide volunteers helped save the vessel and return her home to Port Adelaide in 2014.
Today, this authentic 1864 sailing ship is permanently docked on land at Port Adelaide, where volunteers continue lovingly preserving and restoring her for future generations to experience and enjoy.
What made this event so special was hearing the deeply personal stories of courage, migration, hope, hardship, and new beginnings — all shared with such warmth and authenticity by volunteers who had each researched and written their own character presentations. The passion, dedication, and pride in preserving South Australia’s stories was simply wonderful to witness.
