Following on from our visit with Mary at the Peterborough Print Shop, today we’re sharing more about the remarkable Intertype machine she spoke to us about.
Mary shared the history of this particular machine — including that this one came from England, not America, and how the differences can be identified. It was fascinating to hear how these machines were once central to producing newspapers and printed material for regional communities, playing a vital role in how information was shared.
Standing beside it, we couldn’t help but feel a real sense of awe. Seeing this machine up close shows how inventive ideas were coming together — ideas that would later influence what we came to know as the typewriter, and eventually the computer keyboard we use every day. A powerful reminder of just how far technology has evolved.
This print shop and its machines have survived change, rebuilding and time — and today remain an incredible piece of living history.
Plan your visit to South Australia and put Peterborough on your list of things to do — just under 3 hours north of Adelaide.
Stay with Adelaide Style Accommodation before, after or during your visit, and take the time to experience places like the Peterborough Print Shop for yourself.
Well done to Mary and the team for keeping this important part of our history alive.
