Three weeks ago we shared a fascinating farm find – a historic piece of agricultural machinery that sparked plenty of interest, conversations and memories.

Then something wonderful happened.

Mary from the Peterborough Print Shop reached out with these words:

"You brought back a memory Julie."

She kindly shared this incredible vintage advertisement featuring Hugh V. McKay's Australian "Suntyne" Combined Drill and Cultivator.

As we explored it further, we uncovered even more of its story.

Interestingly, Mary's original document has "1920" handwritten on it, which aligns with what we discovered during our research. The advertisement is believed to date from around 1920 and promotes one of Australia's innovative farming machines of the era. The Suntyne combined drilling and cultivating into one operation, helping farmers save valuable time and labour.

One of the most eye-catching features is the team of kangaroos "pulling" the machine! While this wasn't how the machinery was actually used, it was a clever way of celebrating Australian ingenuity and promoting an Australian-made product built specifically for our unique farming conditions.

Hugh V. McKay, one of Australia's greatest inventors and industrialists, revolutionised Australian farming with his machinery before passing away on 21 May 1926. Remarkably, this year marks 100 years since his passing, making this discovery even more special.

What makes this even more unique is that this particular artwork appears to be quite uncommon, making it a wonderful piece of printed rural history.

It's amazing how one story can lead to another.

Sometimes an old photograph, newspaper clipping or forgotten object tucked away in a shed can unlock stories that might otherwise be lost. If you ever come across something you're unsure about, don't just walk past it. Take a closer look, ask questions, do a little research or chat with someone who remembers. You never know what fascinating piece of Australian history you might uncover.

For our guests exploring South Australia, why not add the Peterborough Print Shop to your itinerary? It's another hidden gem filled with fascinating stories, heritage and history waiting to be discovered.

And if you're planning a South Australian getaway, we'd love to welcome you to stay with us at Adelaide Style Accommodation while you explore the many historic towns, museums and hidden treasures our beautiful state has to offer. Sometimes, the best discoveries are the ones you weren't expecting to find.

A heartfelt thank you to Mary for sharing this remarkable piece of history and helping keep these stories alive. We love that one History Friday post has led to another piece of South Australia's story being uncovered.
