History Friday
Hidden behind the doors of one of Henley Beach South’s stunning historic homes is a fascinating story of Adelaide’s early drapery, hat and boot merchants, elegant seaside summers and architectural craftsmanship from another era.
Recently featured as part of South Australia's History Festival during the month of May, this beautiful Seaview Road residence was opened through the wonderful work of the Henley & Grange Historical Society.
Guests were taken through the history of the families connected to the home and the wider commercial and architectural links to places including the East End Markets.
The home itself was breathtaking — from the beautiful leadlight windows to the soaring decorative ceilings and intricate period details throughout, every room reflected the elegance and craftsmanship of its time.
Adding to the experience were ladies dressed in beautifully made traditional clothing of the era, bringing the stories to life in such a memorable way. Even more impressive was learning that one of the young women had made the garments herself — an amazing example of traditional skills still being preserved today. Check out this short video to be tempted.
For anyone thinking of visiting South Australia, May is the perfect time to explore the many unique events held during South Australia's History Festival. There are so many hidden stories, historic homes and remarkable experiences waiting to be discovered.
The work being done by the Henley & Grange Historical Society in preserving and sharing local history is truly something special.
