History Friday | Stories in the stone

Scattered quietly across parts of the Flinders Ranges are graves like these — simple, weathered, and deeply connected to South Australia’s early history.
What draws you in isn’t just their age… it’s the way they were built.
Simple, layered stone… carefully placed by hand.
In the early days of settlement, especially in remote areas like this, materials were limited. There was no easy access to marble headstones or manufactured monuments, so families and local communities used what they had — often shaping and stacking local sandstone to create something lasting.
These raised stone surrounds weren’t just practical, helping protect the grave from weather and erosion — they also reflect the resilience and resourcefulness of life at the time.
One grave dates back to 1873, and has truly stood the test of time — through weather, changing landscapes, and generations passing by.
One inscription, though weathered, still carries the words:
“Sacred to the memory of…”
A phrase commonly used in the 1800s, offering a quiet but powerful expression of respect and remembrance — even in the most rugged of places.
There’s a simplicity to these graves, yet also a deep sense of care. No elaborate decoration, just stone, placed with intention, and a story that has remained in the landscape for over 150 years.
It’s moments like this that remind us — history isn’t always grand or obvious… sometimes it’s found in the details, in the way something was made, and in the quiet stories left behind.
With South Australia’s History Festival coming up throughout May, it’s a wonderful time to visit, stay a little longer, and uncover even more of the stories that shape this state.
If you’re planning a visit, we’d love to welcome you to stay in one of our homes — the perfect base to explore, experience, and connect with South Australia’s rich history.
