History Friday | The Capri Theatre, Goodwood

Step into a living piece of cinema history at Adelaide's beloved Capri Theatre, proudly celebrating 84 years in 2025.

Originally opened in 1941 as the Goodwood Star Theatre, this Art Deco treasure was renamed The Capri in 1964. Today, it’s lovingly preserved and operated by the Theatre Organ Society of Australia (SA Division) — run almost entirely by dedicated volunteers.

One of its most enchanting features? The fully restored Wurlitzer pipe organ, which rises before select screenings to deliver nostalgic live performances — a rare treat from the golden age of cinema.

 Fun film fact: When Crocodile Dundee was released in the 1980s, it became such a box office smash that it helped pay off the theatre’s mortgage 12 years earlier than expected.

Fast forward to 2025, and what a joy it was to attend the special 40-year celebration of Crocodile Dundee at the Capri. Special guests Delvene Delaney and Victoria Baldock have helped digitally remaster the film into the 4K Encore Cut with Atmos sound — bringing the classic into the modern age.

They also premiered a brand-new documentary, Love of an Icon: The Legend of Crocodile Dundee, capturing behind-the-scenes stories and the legacy of this Aussie classic.
