🌿 Look Closely! 🌿

If you look carefully at this photo, you'll notice something sticking out from the pouch—a tiny foot! Yes, there’s a little joey nestled safely inside this kangaroo mum's pouch. 🦘

Did you know? Newborn joeys are tiny—just 2.5 cm long (about the size of a jellybean!) when they’re born. They climb into the pouch straight after birth, where they latch onto one of the mother’s four teats for milk. What’s even more fascinating is that each teat provides different milk, perfectly tailored to the unique developmental stages of the joeys.

I’ve had the joy of hand-raising a few rescue joeys here in South Australia, and it was such an unforgettable experience! Bobby (a Red Kangaroo), Meesha (a Euro), and Ash (a Western Grey) were fed with Di-Vetelact powdered milk, especially suited to infant fur-less marsupials for their little stomachs. They slept in old hessian potato bags lined with warm towels—adorable to watch as they hopped in and out! After being cared for, they were successfully reintroduced to the wild, where they belong. 🦘❤️

South Australia is a haven for kangaroo lovers, with so many species to see, including the unique ones on Kangaroo Island.
