"Nestled within the serene International Rose Garden of the Adelaide Botanic Garden stands a tribute to the city's namesake—Queen Adelaide. This statue, unveiled on October 31, 2022, was crafted by South Australian sculptor Scott Eames. Eames' artistry captures not only the physical likeness of Queen Adelaide but also conveys the kindness and compassion for which she was renowned.
Born on August 13, 1792, in Meiningen, Germany, Queen Adelaide married William Henry, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews, on July 11, 1818. William ascended to the throne as King William IV on June 26, 1830, making Adelaide the Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and Hanover. It was at his request that the newly established colony in South Australia was named 'Adelaide' in her honor in 1836. Known for her tireless commitment to civic work and charitable endeavors, Queen Adelaide passed away on December 2, 1849, and was laid to rest at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. In September 1953, the Queen Adelaide Room in the Adelaide Town Hall was named in her honor, preceding the visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh to Adelaide on March 19, 1954."
The International Rose Garden itself is a sensory delight, boasting over 2,700 roses and more than 350 rose cultivars. Visitors can wander through a series of colorful, fragrant spaces, including a sunken garden, a circular garden, and several pergolas. The garden showcases areas devoted to Australian-bred roses, single roses, heritage roses, and pillar roses, among others. In October 2022, the World Federation of Rose Societies honored the garden with the Award of Garden Excellence, a title held by only four other gardens in Australia.
