Back in 1993, Thebarton unveiled a cultural gem – a stunning community mural project, officially launched by The Hon. Anne Levy MLC Minister Art and Cultural Heritage and Thebarton Mayor Annette O’Reilley.
These murals are more than just paint on walls – they’re living history. You’ll find:
Cultural and historical images of local people and thriving businesses like the beloved baker, and even scenes of early transport - a horse and cart making its way through town promoting the famously loved Amgoorie tea.
Street maps woven into the artwork, charting how the neighbourhood grew and changed.
Research collaborations with the University of Adelaide’s Commerce Department, blending community memory with academic insight.
Over 30 years later, these murals still invite us to pause, reflect, and celebrate the stories of our community.
And the best part? Art is everywhere here in South Australia – from these historic murals to the vibrant SALA Festival each August, celebrating local artists across the state. Street art, gallery art, and cultural storytelling – there’s always more, more, more to explore!
