Ever spotted the “Aviation pioneer” statue near Adelaide Oval?
That’s Sir Ross Macpherson Smith, a South Australian aviation pioneer who made the first-ever flight from England to Australia in just 28 days back in 1919, alongside his brother Keith and crew in a Vickers Vimy.
His statue, proudly standing in Creswell Gardens, was unveiled in 1927 — facing Mount Lofty, where his historic arrival was first spotted. It honours a truly remarkable feat that changed aviation history forever.
This walking tour moment was captured on a Park Lands SA guided tour, just one of many rich stories woven through our city streets.
