Last Sunday, (2/11/2025) Adelaide’s beloved Regal Theatre marked an incredible 100 years, and what a fabulous celebration it was! A full house gathered, including special guests such as Andrea Michaels MP, Minister for Arts in South Australia (among other portfolios) — a fitting representative for a day celebrating community, creativity, and connection.
The Regal first opened on Sunday, 2 November 1925, and has stood proudly at the heart of Burnside ever since. In 1928, it was taken over by Roberta Waterman’s father, later by Hoyts, and then Wallis Cinemas. In 1963, when it was almost sold for a petrol station, the passionate “Save the Chelsea” group stepped in to rescue her. Then, in 2010, the City of Burnside voted not to sell the building — ensuring that the “old girl” would continue to bring people together for generations to come.
From silent movies with live music to school graduations, weddings, and even a five-year run of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Regal has always been more than a picture house — she’s a survivor and a pillar of community life.
As part of the Adelaide Film Festival, guests dressed in true Roaring 1920s style for a special screening of The Great Gatsby. The evening sparkled with South Australian wines, bubbles, and grazing boxes, celebrating not only a century of film but also a century of shared memories, laughter, and connection.
Next week, the theatre will once again be sold out as Australian actor Bryan Brown launches his new book — another chapter in the theatre’s continuing story.
