We’re growing Allocasuarina verticillata (Drooping She-Oak) as part of our Trees for Life SA journey! This stunning, hardy tree grows up to 10m (often less) and features long, pendulous branchlets and distinctive barrel-shaped cones (2-5cm long). Not only does it withstand salty coastal winds, but it’s also a favorite food source for the Glossy Black Cockatoo on Kangaroo Island!
Blair from Bio·R shared with us how these trees are essential for cockatoos—they hold the cones in their feet, shred them with their powerful beaks, and use their tongues to extract the seeds. Nature is amazing, right?
Growing for @Trees for Life SA has taken us on so many learning adventures. Recently, we picked up Australian Native Plants (Fourth Edition) at the The Hut Community Centre - Book Shed in #Stirling, Adelaide Hills —an absolute goldmine of info. Huge thanks to John Wrigley & Murray Fagg for this incredible resource.
We love the environment and want to share its beauty with you.
